The Penthouse Suite is a vision of white marble: an open-plan living space embellished with  including a Viking throne and black chandelier by designer Lara Bohinc, and an enormous bathroom with a retractable roof under which an oversized Jacuzzi beckons. The Mandrake Suite is the visual antithesis of the Penthouse: a dark and sultry space with Bedouin-style canopy bed, crystal chandelier and freestanding bathtub.

But it’s the outside spaces that really pull focus, a series of open-air terraces surrounded by a three-storey wall of jasmine and passion flowers, which spill down onto wooden decks creating a lush green garden. Here the cabana-style Jurema bar serves al fresco cocktails and snacks from South American/European restaurant YOPO, and on the second floor, a glasshouse apothecary is packed with medicinal plants used by mixologists at Waeska, where the likes of Johnny Depp and Cate Blanchett have been known to drop by.
